Perceptions of Time
by Margaret Ann Lembo
Time is a peculiar thing. Some of us wear watches and constantly look at them. Some of us hurry up to do something or get somewhere, only to wait, and wait, and wait some more, once we complete the task or arrive at our destination. It appears that we are driven by what time something will occur and whether or not we will arrive on time.
As we are progressive by nature, we are constantly striving for the next goal, accomplishment, or desire to be fulfilled in our lives. There is nothing wrong with that. Yet, perhaps we can observe ourselves when we are trying to make that goal or desire manifest. We pray. We light candles. We make manifestation lists. We visualize. We act as if “it” has already occurred in our lives. And, yet, oftentimes we are frustrated during the process of waiting or manifesting.
I have observed that while we are waiting for our desire to manifest, Divine Timing seems to test our patience. Is Divine Timing testing our patience or are we in some ways spoiled children wanting instant gratification?
Ancient cultures have (and still do) observed time through the changing seasons. They observed the changing light from the Sun and the angle at which it lights the planet during the equinoxes, solstices, and cross-quarters. The equinoxes take place when the Sun enters Aries and Libra, the Spring and Fall equinox, respectively. The solstices take place when the Sun enters Cancer and Capricorn, the Summer and Winter solstice, respectively. The angle of light and the length of time that light shines on the planet changes during these times. Additionally, there are the cross-quarters, which are the midpoints between the solstices and the equinoxes. One holiday that we still recognize today in our culture celebrates one of these cross-quarters—Halloween, as well as All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day, which occur October 31 through November 2nd. There is a holiday associated with every cross-quarter in many indigenous cultures.
Whole civilizations built their cities, structures, and temple sites to align with these changing seasons and the observation of time and light. These perceptions of time by indigenous cultures created an avenue to connect with Father Sky above and Mother Earth below and the authentic honoring of these connections. Cultures such as those found in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico and Dzibulchaltun, Uxmal, and Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico, to name only a few, all observed the celestial happenings and aligned their physical world with the sky above. The creation of their Sacred Sites must have taken many years and much patience.
So, you may be wondering what that has to do with wanting things to happen in your life when you say so versus when God/Goddess says so. I believe that when we activate our spiritual connection and our faith we automatically are patient, have trust, and know that all is in Divine Order. When we take the time to read about, study, or visit the places of our ancestors and how they connected and honored All That Is, we make a deeper connection with the Creator and the Will of the Divine.
Faith and trust must be cultivated and developed. Our human-ness wants things. We may decide that we want to have a baby and get pregnant. We may want to be cured of an illness. We may want a soulmate or a significant other—someone to rescue us and take care of us financially and otherwise—to be in our lives. Or, we may decide we want to buy a house. We may decide we want a new car or our stocks to go up.
What do our prayers sound like? Are they whining and moaning for what we want and how we want it NOW! Or are our prayers focused on asking for the help to find the right ways in which to go about realizing our desires. Are we preparing ourselves to be a good parent while we wait and enjoy our current family/significant other with gratitude? Are we asking for the guidance to find the right doctors or health care practitioners to help us create health? Are we asking to be shown and guided about how to make the right livelihood and good financial decisions to afford a new home? Are we developing ourselves spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally so we can be a good partner to our beloved when we find each other?
The waiting and the wanting are normal. Yet, it is time to grow up spiritually and develop ourselves to be more aligned with Divine Timing and the Divine Will. When we develop ourselves through meditation, self-observation, and, perhaps, some classes and reading, we are making good use of valuable precious time.
We are blessed to be on this planet and have the opportunity to enjoy this life while we can.
May we remember to have gratitude for our lives and the many blessings that are constantly surrounding us. May we truly integrate patience, trust, and faith in the Divine. May we awaken our true Divine Self and recognize Divine Time. May we remember to honor Mother Earth beneath our feet, with every step we take, and honor Father Sky above with every breath we take.
Honoring the Sacred Cycles,
may we all be blessed!
