The Community Garden at The Crystal Garden
We have a beautiful garden adjoining The Crystal Garden. We've had a lot of fun and done a lot of work. When we prepared for building the garden beds, we pulled a tremendous amount of weeds. The fiestiest weed was the torpedo grass. These weeds have long runners and take a long time to find the actual tuber-type root.
We have 3 compost bins called Earth Machines. They are community bins and all are welcome. We've already emptied one of the bins and what beautiful composted earth came out of it! Do you know how to compost? If you want to add to our compost bin, here are some guidelines.
Composting Made Easy!
1. Get a waterproof container, preferably plastic, and put it in an accessible place in your kitchen.
2. Toss all your organic materials into the container. Acceptable materials are: bread, egg shells, toilet paper and paper towel rolls, houseplant clippings, dead flowers, vegetable scraps/cuttings and coffee grounds. No fats, oils, bones, meat, fish or dairy products.
3. Daily or weekly bring the container to our community bins or to your own in your own backyard and dump the contents. In our compost bins, we add brown or dry materials such as leaves and mix up the brew. Turning the compost does help the composting process go a little faster. It is important to have a good balance of wet and dry, brown and green.
To obtain your own compost bin if you live in Palm Beach County, contact the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority at 697-2700 or toll free 1-800-930-ASAP. It is very inexpensive to obtain this special compost bin for your own backyard. If you are living in an apartment or you don't want to have your own, you can still compost by bringing your good tossings to our Community Compost here at The Crystal Garden.
It's very easy! AND it really does make a difference. Mother Earth does notice!
The Garden
The Garden is progressing quite nicely. The beds in the shady part of the garden are complete now. It's looking magnificent with the flowering plants. Here's a list of what we've got blooming: marigolds, petunias, snapdragons, azaleas, impatiens, miniature tea roses, dianthus, verbena, chamomile, kalanchoe, pentas, blue porter weed, tiger lilies, canas, pansies, begonia, geraniums . . . and more are getting ready to bloom. We also have herbs: basil, parsley and lavendar. We've planted some bulbs and it's looking like the anemones, gladiolas, onions and narcissus are coming up!
Join in on this community effot. It feels good to dig in the dirt and be with nice people in the fresh air and sunshine. It's great for the body, mind and spirit!
