Seven Generations
Every action we take on this planet affects the next 7 generations. Every time we throw our vegetable scraps, fruit pits, banana peels or coffee grounds into the compost bin instead of the garbage pail, we are making a positive action for the next seven generations. Every time we recycle our plastics, cardboard, glass jars or reuse a piece of paper by using its back, we are making a positive action for the next seven generations. Every time we make the choice to use regular dishes and cloth napkins instead of paper or plastic throw away plates and paper napkins, we are making a positive action for the next seven generations. Every time we buy products made from recycled material, once again, we are making a positive action for the next seven generations.
With Earth Day on April 22, it is time once again to revisit and renew our commitment to our beautiful Mother Earth. It is time to remind our selves to get back into habits of reducing, reusing and recycling or to establish habits that reflect your genuine caring for the planet and what happens to it after you leave the planet. I will be offering a Medicine Wheel event here at The Crystal Garden on Tuesday, April 22 if you wish to come together with me to pray for the Earth and ourselves.
We are all Guardians of Mother Earth. We are the Planetary Stewards. We are the ones responsible for this magnificent planet.
We
were given the gift of living here in virtual paradise. Paradise seems more
evident to me living here in Florida with our magnificent flora, parrots
screeching as they fly overhead and our tropical weather. Of course, the only
way for the earth to remain a paradise is based on how we treat it.
Here are some simple things we can do that definitely make a
difference.
Reuse things until you just can’t reuse them any more.
Recycle all plastic, aluminum and milk carton type containers. Remember to recycle that soda can and water bottle even when it is not as convenient. This may mean you will be carrying it home with you to your own recycle bin.
Reduce the amount of paper, plastic and Styrofoam that you use. Bring your own plate, knife and fork to gatherings when ever possible. When buying at a store, think about whether you really need that plastic bag to carry it home. Think about using paper bags or boxes to carry things. Buy yourself a tote bag to replace the plastic bag and then use it!
Composting is my favorite way of making a difference. I am still amazed at the difference in the small amount of garbage I put out as I compost all organic materials. Composting accomplishes many things. It reduces waste, reuses waste and it re-fertilizes the soil. It’s really quite simple. You may choose to obtain a compost bin from the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (which is quite affordable for Palm Beach County Residents.) Or you may choose to collect your compost materials in your home and drop them off into our Community Compost Bins located behind The Crystal Garden. We have 3 compost bins called Earth Machines. They are community bins and all are welcome. We've already emptied one of the bins and what beautiful composted earth came out of it! We really need to empty all three of them again. If you are strong and like to work with the earth, please call me so we can plan a day to work together to put our composted earth into the garden. I will be grateful for the help.
Do you know how to compost? If you want to add to our compost bin or start your own, here are some guidelines.
Composting Made Easy!
1. Get a waterproof container, preferably plastic, and put it in an accessible place in your kitchen.
2. Toss all your organic materials into the container. Acceptable materials are: bread, egg shells, toilet paper and paper towel rolls, houseplant clippings, dead flowers, vegetable scraps/cuttings and coffee grounds. No fats, oils, bones, meat, fish or dairy products.
3. Daily or weekly bring the container to our community bins or to your own in your own backyard and dump the contents. In our compost bins, we add brown or dry materials such as leaves and mix up the brew. Turning the compost does help the composting process go a little faster. It is important to have a good balance of wet and dry, brown and green. We could certainly use some help with this part of the process if there are any volunteers out there. If we all take turns doing this, it makes for a community effort and it’s not all on one person’s shoulders.
We are stewards of this planet. I have named just a few things here. There are many more things we all can do and not do. All that we do or don’t do affects at least the next 7 generations. We do have a responsibility as guardians of this planet and we are held accountable for our actions or lack of action. It is an individual thing between each of us and God and Mother Earth. So let us all take an additional step toward taking good care of this magnificent planet.
Let us honor the earth and make Earth Day every day!
Blessings, Light, and Love,
Margaret Ann
