A fragrant perennial that is used in many aromatherapy products, essential oil of lavender is the most widely used and versatile healing oil.  Lavender essential oil is the only oil that can be safely applied undiluted to the skin.  Lavender is a very well known relaxant, soother and conditioner,  and is also known for it's ability to ease headaches.
Botanical Name: Lavandula Officinalis (Lavandula vera)
Lavandula angustifolia
Origin: Originally Persia, Canary Islands, Southern France.  Today also in France, England, Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain, Morocco.  French lavender is preferred as it is richer in linalyl acetate giving it a sweeter, fruitier note.
Fragrance: Sweet, herbal to fruity floral scent.
Therapeutic Properties:

Analgesic, , anti-depressant, antimicrobal, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, carminative,  cordial, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, insecticide, nervine, parasticide, sedative, stimulant, sudorific, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary.

Uses:

Lavender was used in earlier days as a condiment and for flavoring dishes.  The essential oil proves admirably restorative and tonic against faintness, palpitations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness, spasms and colic. It is agreeable to the taste and smell, provokes appetite, raises the spirits and dispels flatulence. it can be use for cuts, burns, sunburn, insect bites, rashes, insomnia, headaches, and infections.

Blends Well with: Most oils, especially citrus and florals; also chamomile, juniper, pine, black pepper, clove, cedarwood, clary sage, pine, geranium, vetiver, rosemary and patchouli.
Cautions:  Lavender is one of the least toxic oils, but care should still be taken. People with low blood pressure may feel a bit dull and drowsy  after using this oil. Avoid high doses during the first early month of  pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant.
