THYME

A perennial evergreen sub shrub up to 45cm (18 in) high with a woody root and much branched stem.  It has grey-green, aromatic leaves and pale purple or white flowers.  One of the earliest medicinal plants in Western herbal medicine, its main areas of application are respiratory problems, digestive complaints and the prevention and treatment of infection.  The plant has been assigned to the planet Mars, which suggests that the herb has strong, fiery elements.  In Greek thyme means "courage." Thyme is a remedy that supplies energy in times of physical and psychological weakness. 
 

Botanical Name: Thymus vulgaris
Origin: France and Spain
Fragrance: Intense, herbal, hot
Therapeutic Properties: Bactericidal, astringent, aphrodisiac, parasiticide, stimulant, anti-viral, expectorant, antiseptic, antispasmodic.

Uses:

Obesity, edema, poor circulation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, arthritis, gout, muscular aches &pains, rheumatism, sprains, cystitis, urinary tract infections, headaches, insomnia & stress -related complaints, asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, laryngitis sinusitis, tonsillitis, chills, colds, flu, infectious diseases, Abscess, acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, insect bites. lice, scabies

Blends Well with: Bergamot, lemon, rosemary, melissa, lavender, grapefruit, clary sage, rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree, marjoram and pine.

Cautions:  Thyme essential oil can irritate the skin and mucus membranes as well as increase blood pressure, so use it in low doses.  Should not be used by pregnant women or children. Always dilute it well if used. Excessive internal use of thyme can lead to symptoms of poisoning and to over stimulation of the thyroid gland. Use caution.
